From anti-depressants to sedatives, from painkillers to sleeping pills, the use of prescription medication is spiralling

The use of prescription drugs such as painkillers and tranquillisers, as well as medicines to treat insomnia and depression, has soared over the past decade in Ireland. Other countries are already experiencing high-profile problems. In last Tuesday’s State of the Union address, US president Donald Trump vowed to end the country’s opioid crisis, which is now claiming 174 lives per day, or seven per hour.
