Big tobacco gives up battle to halt plain packaging

Standardised packaging aims to reduce the attractiveness of tobacco products

Big tobacco does not intend to mount any further legal challenges to the plain packaging cigarettes, which will be introduced at the end of this month.

Japan Tobacco International (JTI) initiated legal action to challenge the competence of Ireland under EU law to adopt plain packaging in 2015.

The judge adjourned proceedings pending an EU legal action.
