Reasons to live, work and play in Gorey

No quiet commuter town: Gorey has a strong tourism sector and a vibrant high street

North Wexford became a part of the Dublin commuter belt during the boomtime of the noughties – and Gorey town has almost doubled its population since 1996.

But the town itself is not a classic ‘greater Dublin region’ commuter town – quiet by day and simply a dormitory for stressed-out motorway travellers by night.

The area has always had a strong tourism sector and Gorey has all the facilities and amenities you would expect from a region with a stunning coast and a lot of visitors.

Hotels such as the four-star Amber Springs and the nearby Ashdown Park offer contemporary, stylish surroundings and great facilities. The Amber Springs has an impressive health spa and leisure centre, while the Ashdown has similar facilities along with a fully fitted-out gym and has made its name as the region’s leading conference centre.

Outdoors, a string of blue-flag beaches stretches down the coast, with two or three within a short drive of the town.

And in the town itself, you will find a vibrant high street that has managed to avoid the decay and dereliction which have blighted so many of our medium-sized towns around the country. New and adventurous cafés and restaurants have made the town something of a foodie destination – with restaurants like the Kitchen, recently rated Best Casual Dining in Wexford in the Irish Restaurant Awards, leading the way.

It’s a vibrant community with thriving sports clubs and associations and schools that are tapping into the town’s status as a tech hub for the region to inspire pupils to pursue careers in emerging and fast-growing sectors.

Talk to both locals and blow-ins and they will tell you there is a buzz about the place that is only growing, even as new residential developments like the edge-of-town MillQuarter help grow the population.
