Encouraging firms to do the right thing

The All Ireland Occupational Safety Awards,which took place in Galway last month, aim to inspire companies to protect their workers, writes Lorraine Courtney

‘When something goes wrong in a workplace, it generates lots of negative publicity,” said Harry Galvin, president of the National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO).

“We wanted to encourage companies to do the right thing when we set up these Awards almost 30 years ago. There was a lot of interest, so it became a national competition and, subsequently, the Awards evolved into an All Ireland safety competition.”
