In any century, a half penny wouldn’t actually buy very much, but in 2021 a 1774 half penny is a very different kettle of coinage. This extremely rare, Irish proof or pattern copper half penny was bought many years ago for around US$2. From the collection of US numismatist Eric Newman, it portrays George III with long hair and the letters HIBERNIA, a harp and the date on the reverse.

Bid for it at Dix Noonan Webb’s online sale of Coins and Historical Medals, February 2, estimate £2,400-£3,000: see dnw.co.uk.
