Brought to book at Bonham’s
The auction house’s latest sale is a banquet of leather-bound literary volumes from times past
The notion of the gentleman’s library dates back to the times when women were not encouraged to read – for fear it would lead to nervous hysteria. An annual event, Bonham’s 2020 sale has the expected complement of antiques, objets d’art, paintings, and leather-bound books.
Of Irish interest is a lot comprising 22 volumes of the works of Jonathan Swift, plus 69 volumes by Voltaire and 17 by Francis Bacon (£700-£1,000).
