Running better projects is a key objective for many organisations. This is a way of taking advantage of new opportunities and of facing up to future challenges.
Yet, far too many companies don’t take the time to find out how best to do this. The starting point is to look for a project methodology that makes sense. There are a number of different methodologies around and one of the most widely accepted of them is called PRINCE2.
The History of PRINCE2
PRINCE2 can be traced back to the 1980s. In this decade, the UK Government started looking at a way of standardising project work. The original PRINCE methodology came out in 1990 but was replaced by the more flexible PRINCE2 a few years later.
This methodology is now used by companies all over the world. What started out as a solution for IT projects is also now used in many different industries. The versatile approach that it offers means that it can work equally well for a huge variety of projects.
PRINCE2 is the planet’s most widely used project management methodology. While it is still extremely popular in the UK, it has grown enormously in popularity in other parts of the world. Indeed, it is now available in 11 languages and exams have been taken in more than 100 countries.
The PRINCE2 guidelines undergo periodic views. This means that they are regularly brought up to date and in line with the latest ways of working. The latest revision came in 2017.
What Does It Cover?
PRINCE2 covers a number of principles, processes and themes. This means that it includes everything needed to run a successful project from start to finish.
In total, there are seven principles. These are listed as follows; Continued Business Justification, Learn From Experience, Defined Roles And Responsibilities, Manage By Stages, Manage By Exception, Focus On Products, and Tailor To Suit The Project Environment. As for the themes, there are also seven of these, which are as follows; Business Case, Organisation, Quality, Plans, Risk, Change, and Progress.
As you may have guessed, there are also seven processes. These are; Starting Up A Project, Initiating A Project, Directing A Project, Controlling A Stage, Managing Product Delivery, Managing Stage Boundaries, and Closing A Project.
As mentioned earlier, there are other methodologies available. If you have been on the likes of PMP or MSP courses then you will understand a few of the different ways of running projects. Agile courses cover another of the most popular methods. Yet, PRINCE2 has emerged as a clear favourite among users.
How Can It Help a Business?
Naturally, there have to be strong business reasons for using a particular methodology. With PRINCE2, there are several powerful advantages to this way of working.
* A standardised approach. Perhaps the biggest benefit is that every single project is carried out in the same way. No matter what the objective is or how wide the scope is, you can be sure that every project is handled equally.
* Easy to introduce new team members. Another big advantage is that everyone who works on these projects is trained in the same way. This means that it is easy to integrate new staff. Indeed, training is now available in many cities in the UK and elsewhere.
* A high level of project control. The processes are followed on PRINCE2 in the same way every time. This means that it is easier for the management team to feel in control of what is happening.
* Good communication. Excellent communication is another key element of PRINCE2 projects. This helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page at all times.
