Varadkar outlines challenges facing state pension provision

The state pension will continue to be the bedrock of the Irish pension system, Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar told the inaugural Sunday Business Post Pensions & Investments summit on Thursday.

But there are significant “challenges regarding the sustainability of the state pension”, he said, noting that the ratio of people who are of working age to those who are pensioners was expected to decrease by half by 2040.
