Increased electricity demand, escalating costs, pressure on the grid and a greater drive towards sustainability mean that businesses are looking for alternatives to energy supply – one that enables efficient on-site energy control. Occupancy of office and industry spaces for many companies during the global pandemic of 2020 has been sparse, even non-existent, especially during the height of the shutdown, yet building expenses often remain constant.

At the same time, regulation is challenging everyone to use energy more efficiently. Technology is transforming the energy landscape too. New energy sources are appearing, from wind and solar to high-efficiency batteries. These changes are putting power in the hands of customers and turning energy from a simple commodity into a critical source of business advantage.

There is an appetite among Irish businesses for innovative and insightful energy technologies. As a business owner, you are well aware of your company’s energy costs — but do you know just how much control you can potentially have over them?

Bord Gáis Energy’s Combined Heat and Power (CHP) solution captures your business’s excess energy and turns it into electricity and heat. It means you can save more on your energy costs, reduce your carbon footprint and become less reliant on the grid. CHP is a sustainable, efficient, cost-effective and low carbon source of energy. The plants generate power and heat simultaneously on the business’s own site.

At present, electricity is generated by power plants far away from the point of consumption. All of the heat created during the generation process is dumped as waste. In a CHP, that heat is captured for use in the building or buildings served by the plant. That in itself considerably reduces energy costs and carbon emissions. In addition, there is no loss of power between the generating plant and the customer, as happens in the transmission network at present.

CHP plants are designed to be able to use hydrogen, biogases and blends of those with natural gas. This means they are future proofed to be able to use decarbonised gases as they become available. This will further reduce carbon emissions over time.

With our sister company, Centrica Business Solutions, Bord Gáis Energy can offer you end-to-end project management that helps your business remain in control of its energy usage and save on energy costs. This means that you are enhancing your energy security by reducing our dependency on the grid and helping businesses sustain energy price volatility and supply disruptions while also advancing your climate change and sustainability goals by reducing carbon emissions and other pollutants.

By increasing energy efficiency and managing costs as well as diversifying your energy supply through enabling further integration of domestically produced and renewable fuels, there is potential to also improve your business competitiveness. Capturing heat that is normally wasted means that you will also be improving your energy efficiency. This is significant given the rising wholesale market of gas and electricity.

CHPs are suitable across a range of commercial buildings, from hotels, health clubs, office buildings and nursing homes to larger manufacturing sites such as food processing, datacentres and glass manufacturing. The installation process is very efficient, with short lead times with market-leading standards.

Before a CHP unit can be correctly sized and the associated savings accurately calculated, the appropriate site data needs to be collected and validated. The minimum data requirement centres around the electricity and gas consumption of your site and the associated tariffs. Once the data is collected and validated, a simple evaluation of whether a CHP is likely to be feasible or not can be easily conducted.

We then conduct an onsite review to determine the installation options and cost. It is imperative to understand the site to ensure suitability. Installation costs can vary from site to site depending on several key factors such as location of CHP plant, planning implications, local regulations and maintenance restrictions.

Sometimes the project doesn’t fit the mould. Perhaps you have limited access space or working from a listed or protected building and are not sure what your options are. We can offer you a bespoke solution allowing you to work closer with us so we can develop a more tailored CHP. You can be assured that we will be compliant with building and environmental regulations.

Once you are happy to go ahead with the installation, Bord Gáis Energy will project manage your entire installation for you. We will work with you to ensure you receive the best possible return and will continue to support your evolving energy efficiency strategy. Our approach is to understand all aspects of your business and develop a design to suit your business’s needs.

The average payback time on a CHP investment is between three and five years. For larger plants the payback time is typically less than three years. Bord Gáis Energy can offer your business attractive finance packages to spread the cost over a number of years.

We also offer design, manufacture, operate and maintenance packages which allow you to enjoy all the benefits of heat and power on site along with the reduced energy costs and carbon emissions while we look after everything else. Our turnkey service includes 24/7 monitoring and maintenance and you can rest assured that the plant is running at optimal efficiency at all times.

With over 35 years of expertise in the energy sector, we can give peace of mind that your CHP installation is scoped, installed, operated and maintained for optimal performance. As the energy partner to businesses across Ireland, we can give you real-time knowledge and insight into individual usage, emissions data and help meet compliance regulations.

It’s now more important than ever to have efficient and measurable energy insights to ensure your business is as effective and competitive as possible. If you are interested in finding out more about our CHP solution, email us at [email protected]
