Investment in research critical to hit marine sector targets

The importance of the ocean to the economy cannot be underestimated. According to the Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit the Irish marine sector has an estimated turnover of €4.5 billion and supports over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs.

But, the significance and potential of the marine sector is far greater.

The government has set a target to double the value of our ocean wealth to 2.4 per cent of GDP by 2030.
