Scale of US electoral chicanery shouldn’t blind us to our flaws

Arrangements for voting are largely controlled by each state in the US which is allowing Republican-run administrations to organise voter suppression

As the current election heads into its final fortnight before polling day on November 3, the weakness of the system is being exposed by the combined pressures of the pandemic

Harris County in east Texas is at the centre of an ongoing legal and political dispute which illustrates how the rules governing American elections cause interminable arguments.

The row began when Greg Abbott, the state’s Republican governor, announced last month that only one official drop box for postal votes – much more freely available in the US than in Ireland – would be provided in each county, irrespective of its size or population.
