In a parliamentary democracy, the role of the opposition is to advocate, scrutinise and oppose. The role of the media is to report, analyse, explain and criticise. Most of that goes out the window when there is a scent of blood in the water.

When opposition and media are in full flight baying for blood, citizens depend on government to bring authority and a sense of proportion to the controversy. Outrage may be understandable and...
