Russia dooms Ireland’s bid to have climate change integrated into the work of the United Nations Security Council

Some 113 of the 193 countries with UN membership supported the resolution, while 12 of the 15 members of the council supported it, with India voting no, and China abstaining

Simon Coveney, Minister for Foreign Affairs, said the process had at least confirmed that a majority of UN members believed the council needed to factor the security risks of climate change into its decision making

After months of multi-frontal diplomatic gymnastics, Ireland’s efforts to have climate change integrated into the work of the United Nations Security Council expired yesterday, courtesy of Russia.

Though Taoiseach Micheál Martin had denied back in September that the initiative was evidently “doomed” due to the opposition of key council members, yesterday it was the doom mongers who were unfortunately proven right.

The proposition itself was a worthy one, as many doomed propositions are.
