A late entry from Morocco – and a tweet from Donald Trump - dashed hopes of a neat outcome, and football’s governing body today faces a contest which will be almost as fiercely fought as the 64 matches in the 2018 version

After the toxic fall-out from the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, Fifa would have been hoping for a much smoother 2026 process.

Up to last year, a neat outcome was a possibility, with the US, Mexico and Canada coming together to bid for the tournament, the first to host 48 teams.
