British pub magnate Tim Martin, who heads up Wetherspoons, has called on the government to abandon plans to introduce a sugar tax in Ireland, saying it will deeply damage the pub trade here.

“I don’t think it’s the answer to obesity and it tends to push more customers towards supermarkets which I don’t think is good for the country,” he said.
