When the Irish Greyhound Derby takes place later this week at Shelbourne Park, it would be no harm to ask the hardened aficionados where they would place the industry if it were analysed via the animal kingdom’s conservation status scale.

There are seven categories: extinct, extinct in the wild, critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, near threatened, conservation dependent and least concern. One could make a case for most of the septet.
