Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe was told in no uncertain terms during “urgent meetings” requested by senior staff from Paddy Power Betfair and Boylesports earlier this month that his department had made a devastating miscalculation by increasing the betting tax.

Figures presented to the minister show the increase in betting tax from 1 per cent to 2 per cent has wreaked havoc on retail returns.
