Denis O’Brien has offloaded his petrol retailer Topaz to Canadian company Couche-Tard.

The surprise deal comes just weeks after Topaz sealed its position as Ireland’s biggest forecourt operator with the takeover of Esso’s Irish business.

No price on the takeover was disclosed by either company.

The deal will see chief executive Emmet O’Neill leaving Topaz when the deal is completed, but no replacement chief executive has yet been selected.
