There was a time when being appointed editor of a national newspaper, particularly one as significant as the Irish Times, was a jubilant occasion.

Alas, things have changed. When Paul O’Neill’s new role as editor of the 158-year-old newspaper was announced in April, he says he received many messages of congratulations, but every well-wisher also referred to the “challenge” he faced.
