A decade after I met with Martin McGuinness to lobby for the introduction of a special corporation tax rate in the North, provision for the 12.5 per cent rate is on the statute books

It is almost a decade ago since I met with Martin McGuinness to lobby for the introduction of a special corporation tax rate for the North. Back then, we were doing the rounds of all the political parties in the North to put the idea across that a special tax rate might drive foreign direct investment into an economy which was, and still is, too highly dependent on the public sector. The notion was that a special tax rate might result in businesses setting up in Bangor rather than Bangalore, and thus provide sustainable private sector jobs which could exist independently of the Westminster block grant.
