‘Tech’ firms can no longer publish and be damned
If RTÉ had live-streamed the Christchurch atrocity there would have been hell to pay. Facebook et al are media companies, they need to take responsibility for what they publish
‘Social media platforms can connect people in many very positive ways, and we all want this to continue,” said New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern.
“No tech company, just like no government, wishes to see violent extremism and terrorism online. But for too long, it has also been possible to use these platforms to incite extremist violence, and even to distribute images of that violence, as happened in Christchurch. This is what needs to change.”
