Ireland is by far the most successful country in the EU at integrating migrants, and it’s vital that debate on the issue is not allowed to descend into emotional soundbites.

The issue of migration is back on the agenda. Before we start with the economics, I’d like you to think about language for a minute. When I write the word ‘emigration’, what images come to mind? Do you see coffin ships and Liverpool’s docks, the Statue of Liberty, or something else? And when I then write the word ‘immigration’ or ‘immigrant’, what images come to mind? Who do you see? What are they here for? Is it for work, study, safety, or something else? Are they you? Are they different from you and, if so, how?
