Ireland is a funny place sometimes. As a country we spend more subsidising the production of sheep and greyhounds than we do helping families afford childcare. That is changing, but slowly.

Across the EU, families spend an average of 15 per cent of their disposable income on childcare, while in Ireland families spend 27 per cent. For a single earning family, that figure is 42 per cent.
