Sports fans are infuriatingly difficult for broadcasters to read.

They display loyalty to their teams and favourite athletes in the face of poor results, disciplinary issues and even occasional skullduggery.

Yet they can be as fickle as a toddler going through the terrible twos. And just when you think you have them figured out, they switch off.
