The gift voucher provider Smartbox, which invested millions of euro in an Irish launch last year, has said laws to set five-year expiry dates for vouchers will have a “chilling effect” on the future of its Irish operation.

The French-founded company, which issues vouchers for specific activities or experiences instead of a fixed monetary amount, moved its headquarters to Dublin in 2009. It employs 600 staff in the capital.
