Six of the best, part one

In this and next week’s columns, I reflect on 12 seasonal developments that have had a big impact on audiences and media in general. Here are my first half-dozen

Chelsea Clinton, Julia Gillard, Jameela Jamil, Vicky Phelan. That’s right, Vicky Phelan - who, let’s be honest has more important things on her mind than the media. She shot to international prominence when she was listed on the BBC’s 100 Women 2018 list, which shares “inspirational, difficult and surprising stories from women all over the world”. The Limerickwoman came to our attention for her efforts in uncovering the CervicalCheck scandal. She never painted herself as a victim, but instead took on the might of the establishment fighting for her rights and the rights of others. Despite the sword of Damocles hanging over her head, she lifted the nation’s mood with her positivism and sense of purpose. As she said at the time: “They were expecting a very sick woman, now, I was very sick, but they weren’t expecting me.”
