The national broadcaster’s coverage of the papal visit was a far cry from what it served up in 1979, but it still had to tread carefully at times

Back in 1979, I tried my best to avoid the first papal visit. As a young man in my early 20s, I recoiled from this particular blockbuster. What was it with the supplication of the establishment and their genuflection to Pope John Paul II? I spent the day in Captain America’s on Grafton Street in Dublin, gripped by a funk about Irish society and the hold the Catholic Church enjoyed over it.
