Rounding up of small coins starts today

Coin rounding is being rolled out from today in Ireland. When consumers get cash change the amount will be rounded to the nearest five cent.

This follows a successful trial by the National Payments Plan in Wexford in 2013.

In Wexford,100 per cent of retailers supported the trial and favoured its national rollout.

Rounding will only be conducted on a voluntary basis and small coins will still remain as legal tender.
