Revenue targets €200m in avoidance campaign

Probe involves transactions that have little or no commercial reality other than to avoid tax, according to report

The Revenue Commissioners’ division that deals with the tax affairs of the country’s wealthiest individuals and largest companies is seeking to recover more than €200 million in tax from anti-avoidance schemes.

The taxman’s large cases division is looking to recover €135.5 million from 109 cases of so-called general anti-avoidance rules. This involves transactions that have little or no commercial reality other than to avoid tax, according to the Revenue’s annual report for 2016.
