Revenue is cracking down on bogus self-employment

Businesses which falsely treat staff as self-employed contractors are starting to wake up to the risks

Both the Department of Social Protection and the Revenue Commissioners are increasing their focus on businesses which treat members of their workforce as self-employed contractors when they should be treated as employees.

A code of practice on what constitutes an employee is available from the Revenue. However, the renewed focus by Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty in recent weeks to put this code on a statutory footing has fuelled a further clampdown.
