Podcast: 'RTÉ needs to make high-quality drama to survive and prosper' - Ed Guiney

Element Pictures boss tells Colette Sexton that BBC ‘rehashes’ leave him cold

The Media Matters Podcast

In the second instalment of Media Matters, Colette Sexton is joined by Ed Guiney who runs film and television production company Element Pictures with Andrew Lowe.

The company has worked on a number of high-profile films including Adam and Paul, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, A Date For Mad Mary and The Lobster, as well as the Oscar and Golden Globe winning Room.

The company is also behind the hit TV3 garda drama Red Rock and RTÉ's Charlie and Rebellion.

It also runs and operates Dublin's Lighthouse Cinema and Galway's arthouse cinema, which is due to open at the end of the year.

Guiney tells Sexton that he finds it "deeply depressing" that RTÉ buys in TV formats from abroad that are a "rehash" of what is done in other countries.

"I presume that is to do with the fact that they have had this blow to revenue, but I think that if they are to survive and prosper and be relevant going forward, that is one of the ways they can really distinguish themselves, in making high-quality drama for an Irish audience,” he said.
