Patents turn a corner as applications increase

Irish patent applications are up by 49 per cent in the first nine months of this year.

The Irish Patent Office (IPO) received 364 applications for full-term and short-term patents from January until the end of September – 118 more than last year.

The recent increase bucks a trend of decline. Since 2008, Irish patent applications have declined by 68 per cent, from 1,007 in 2008 to 321 in 2014.
