Our housing policies are digging us into a deeper hole

Enough tinkering with subsidies and tax breaks. What we have doesn’t work.

There is no private sector solution to the mess that is the housing, mortgage, land, banking, construction, transport, services nexus. We shouldn’t even pretend there is one. Such is the entrenched failure of the existing model that tinkering at the edges – like reducing Vat on new builds – amounts to giving a man in a very deep hole a new shovel, the better to carry on digging the same hole even deeper.
