Oil strike off Kerry could fuel a political firestorm

Ireland may be on the brink of a major oil find off the coast, which could create a frenzy of activity from other exploration companies. But at what cost?

An application led by the Chinese National Offshore Oil company and ExxonMobil to drill an exploratory oil and gas well over 200km off the coast of Kerry was quietly lodged late last year with the Department of Communications, Energy and Environment. That application has in the last two weeks passed a fast track Environmental Impact Assessment screening test despite warnings from environmental NGOs An Taisce and Friends of the Irish Environment.
