A boisterous crowd of thousands surrounded Omonia, the shabby square in central Athens where Alexis Tsipras, the man expected to be Greece’s next prime minister, was holding his final campaign rally.

Tsipras, the charismatic leader of Syriza, the party that’s leading in all opinion polls, promised to create jobs and help the poorest Greeks recover from a deep economic depression that had been fuelled by four years of austerity measures.
