Blizzards, blankets of snow, strong winds and bitter cold forced businesses across the country to reduce staff, batten down the hatches or close entirely last week. The major weather disruption has caused significant financial loss to retailers, restaurants, hoteliers and other major service providers.

John Miley, owner of Curran’s shoe repair shop off Baggot Street in Dublin, closed his shop on Wednesday when Met Éireann issued a red warning, its most severe alert.
