Masatomo Sumitomo was born in Japan in 1585. A former Buddhist monk, in approximately 1615 he founded a small shop from which he sold books and medicines. He was apparently a man of strong principles. While building his business, he decided to commit to paper his ideas on conducting commercial activities in a moral and ethical manner.
