Once the brash, aggressive public face of Ryanair, these days its chief executive is more likely to be spotted at the racetrack. Will he extend his contract when it ends next year with his 60th birthday looming?

Michael O’Leary ended a difficult 2017 on a personal high note. His horses, wearing the colours of his Gigginstown Stud, had eight winners from the 28 races over the four days of the high-profile Leopardstown Christmas Festival, one of the highlights of the Irish jump racing calendar. It was a remarkable success rate. A smiling O’Leary was photographed hugging one of his young daughters in the winners’ enclosure. Winner all right, as the saying in the sport goes.
