From solicitor to chairman, James Osborne was an ebullient character never afraid to take a risk. Matt Cooper remembers the former chairman of INM

James Osborne was an unusually ebullient solicitor. Many solicitors keep a low profile, especially those who act as advisers to big business. Mostly, they rarely impinge on the public consciousness. Osborne may not have been a household name, at least to the general public, but he was a solicitor exceptionally well known in Irish business circles over a period of nearly 40 years; as an adviser, director and investor. His reputation was as someone never afraid to speak his mind, and to hold to his position, publicly or privately, no matter how powerful his adversary. It was something that occasionally led him into confrontation.
