At 2pm last Monday – Cyber Monday, as it has come to be known – the press office at the Department of Communications sent out a press release.

“CYBER MONDAY,” it read. “ALEX WHITE URGES IRISH COMPANIES AND CONSUMERS TO BOOST IRISH ONLINE TRADE”. There followed a description of the government’s “trading online voucher scheme”, under which qualifying businesses can avail of a €2,500 grant to assist in e-commerce, or e-tail.
