Invested: The commodities rollercoaster

Commodities markets worldwide are likely to remain highly volatile, writes Constantin Gurdgiev

A recent paper* by a group of seasoned financial researchers looked at the linkages between the longer-term trends in commodity prices and economic crises. Based on two centuries’ worth of data, in today’s terms, we are looking at the evolving super-cycle in primary commodities. The trough in both commodity and financial capital flow cycles dates back to the turn of the century. By late-2011, we were amid the peak of both the primary commodities prices and financial flows, followed by their subsequent collapse.
