Like many marketing gimmicks, cashback mortgages aren’t what they’re cracked up to be. In fact, even economists might argue they should be banned

Happiness comes with a cashback mortgage. At least that is what the marketing departments of half the Irish banks tell us. Who wouldn’t be attracted to the idea of free cash just when your household faces a cashflow crunch? Some furniture would be nice, or maybe to pay a relative back or enjoy a much-needed holiday after years of wading through property websites. Do you know cashback couples have more holidays abroad than the rest of us? There is no escape from the marketing.
