Companies need to take a proactive role in GDPR

Corné Purcell of United Drug, Lloyds Pharmacy & TCP

What's your name?

Corné Purcell

What position do you hold?

Data Protection Officer for United Drug, Lloyds Pharmacy & TCP. As the Irish unit we are part of the Celesio Group in Europe and ultimately McKesson worldwide.

How long have you held the position?

I've been with Lloyds Pharmacy since 2012 and United Drug & TCP since January 2017.

What are your day to day responsibilities?

Most of my time is spent with GDPR. This would involve adapting SOP’s, creating tools to assist the business with data protection, training colleagues and importantly adapting GDPR into our business.

What is your professional background?

I am originally from South Africa, I went to college there and also here in Ireland. My degree and professional background is in accounting and finance. A number of years back I became very interest in data protection and started educating myself on the topic. I’m contemplating an MSc in Compliance at the moment.

Tell me about yourself away from work?

Myself and my partner spend a lot of time outdoors. Kayaking, sea swimming, cycling or walking the mountains take up most of our time. Our first attempt at a triathlon is coming up in September - hopefully!

Tell us something very few people know about you?

I’ve started learning to play the ukulele. 'Started' and 'learning' being the key words here!

You are speaking at our GDPR Summit in September. What are you speaking about?

I’m sitting on a panel of three and we will take questions on where we are on the GDPR and provide advice on what to do if you haven’t started. I’m very much looking forward to this as discussing topical issues is beneficial to all of us, no matter where you are in the rollout cycle.

What challenges do you see for organisations implementing the new regulations?

Awareness. I’m very fortunate however to be part of a company that has taken a proactive role in GDPR. We have support across our European business units to deal with challenges that can (and will) come up.

Corné Purcell will be appearing at theGDPR Summit on Tuesday, September 12 at Croke Park, Dublin. Make sure your business is ready for this important legislation withGDPR17.com.
