There is a rationale behind the move by International Paper, and though it has been rebuffed, there is speculation that a deal could be reached if the price was right, writes Ian Guider

Before there was CRH, Kerry Group or Ryanair, there was one business that could truly claim to be Ireland’s only multinational company. While turning paper into boxes may not have been the sexiest of industries, over the years Michael Smurfit transformed the factory he inherited from his father Jefferson into a world leader at a time when there were few Irish international success stories.
