Glasgow and Berlin are unlikely dual hosts but the two cities are part of an effort by sports governing bodies to take back some power from the Olympic movement, writes Emmet Ryan

With the GAA championships at the business end of their campaigns and the exploits of the Irish women’s hockey team of late, the clutter of sports events that began on Thursday could easily have been missed by the casual observer.

The first ever European Championships began on Thursday. That’s not to be confused with lots of other events known by the same name, despite these championships including a bunch of those.
