The European Commission has told retailers it will need “robust evidence” to start an investigation into the rising cost of their insurance policies.

The country’s largest retail industry representative body wrote to the European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager earlier this month after the commission launched a high-profile investigation into allegations of cartel activity in the motor insurance industry.
