Change follows vacant site crackdown

Dunnes Stores is facing further pressure over its idle property portfolio, with new government rules due to crack down on firms that sit on vacant buildings.

The new commercial rates bill, passed in recent months by government, has granted local authorities new powers to help bring idle properties back into active use.

The majority of councils do not apply commercial rates to vacant properties. However, the new act would oblige them to do so.
