Contemporary best practice tells us the modern leader does not lead by wielding power, but by creating a vision, inspiring and collaborating

Throughout most of my career in banking, the predominant style of leadership I experienced was paternalistic and authoritarian. Leadership was about the use of power to extrinsically motivate and drive performance.

Leadership styles were built on the ‘command and control’ principle, which evolved later into ‘predict and control’, as the era of financial modelling and forecasting took hold.
