One of the greatest commentators you’ve never heard of is about to step away from the mic for good

With commentators, the usual rule is for the viewer to be generally happy if they don’t annoy you, hope they are decent, and hold on for dear life if they are good. Greats are terribly rare. It’s an unenviable position for those who work the mic. Next to referees, no party in any sports broadcast gets more criticism from the viewing public than whoever is calling a game. Every error is analysed and it didn’t take the social media age for those on the call to feel it.
