UEFA proposal to give bigger leagues extra spots has sparked a backlash

Next Tuesday, the UEFA Champions League resumes after a break for international football, with the third round of matches in the group stage.

For many football fans, the date is no longer marked in red on their diaries, with many pundits and supporters complaining that there are too many one-sided or meaningless matches.

Although UEFA has already signalled changes for the 2018-19 season, these have not been universally welcomed.
